Violin Labeled Albert Mertes by Herman Geipel 4/4
This charming violin is labeled:
No. 3162
"Master"
Art-Violin
Albert V. Mertes
Cincinnati, O. USA
Petrus Guarneri
This is a fantastic example of Markneukirchen worksmanship and this instrument comes to us in a very good state of preservation. It most likely was originally sold by Albert V. Mertes, who sold instruments in Cincinnati in the early years of the 20th century, circa 1920. While we may not be able to identify the craftsperson by name, we can appreciate the skill, dedication, and great subtlety that went into this instruments' construction. Petite dimensions make this violin very easy to play and the inclusion of Wittner Precision Pegs compliment the ebony fittings well and make tuning very efficient. This would be a great violin for an intermediate or advancing student or a devoted amateur seeking a violin of great quality at a very moderate price. It has plenty of color and overtones and is very responsive. The lower register has plenty or presence and projection- the middle register's tone is clear and bright, and the upper register sings effortlessly. It is covered in a rich reddish to brown varnish throughout and the violin's overall shape is reminiscent of Peter Guarneri.
