Rental FAQ

Q: What is the minimum rental period for instruments?
A: The minimum rental period is 3 months.

Q: How will I be charged for my rental?
A: After the initial 3-month period, you will be automatically charged monthly via credit card, including tax and insurance, unless you return the instrument.

Q: What types of instruments do you offer for rental?
A: We offer a variety of sizes for violins, violas, and cellos, all of which come as basic rental instruments from our shop.

Q: Should I rent or purchase an instrument for my child?
A: If your child is committed to playing long-term, purchasing is the best option, as it allows for a higher quality instrument and broader selection. For those just starting or unsure, renting is advisable, especially for rapidly growing children, as it allows for easy size exchanges without extra costs.

Q: Are your rental instruments high quality?
A: Yes, we offer high-quality student instruments that are set up, adjusted, and cleaned by our expert luthiers. These instruments are better than the lowest-priced options available online.

Q: Why shouldn't I get the cheapest instrument?
A: Cheap instruments often have poor construction and materials, leading to bad playability and sound quality. At LA Violin Shop, we ensure that all instruments meet music educators' standards, helping students get the best start.

Q: Is your rental program the same as a Rent-to-Own program?
A: No, our rental instruments are separate from those available for purchase. When you’re ready to buy, you can choose from any instrument at our regular retail prices.

Q: How can I accumulate rental credit?
A: You can accrue rental credit without limits. This credit can be applied towards the purchase of an instrument, covering up to 50% of its retail price.

Q: Are there any items that I cannot use rental credit on?
A: Rental credit cannot be used for accessories, cases, bows, or items valued over $10,000 or consigned instruments. Additionally, it does not cover taxes or Protection Plan fees.

Q: How long do I have to use my rental credit?
A: Rental credits must be used within 1 month of the end of your final payment.

Q: What happens if I miss a payment?
A: If you miss a payment or fail to keep your account current, you will forfeit your rental credit.

Q: What does the Protection Plan cover, and what are my liabilities?
A: The Protection Plan is required with all rentals and provides coverage for accidental damage and normal wear and tear during your rental period.

However, renters remain responsible for:

  • Excessive wear,

  • Major damage,

  • Unauthorized repairs, or

  • Loss due to negligence, mysterious disappearance, or intentional abuse.

In such cases, a pro-rated replacement cost may be charged.
If your rental account becomes past due, the Protection Plan will be suspended, and any damage or loss during that time will be your full responsibility.

Q: Can I return the instrument at the end of the school year and re-rent in the fall?
A: Yes, but you will lose any rental credit accrued. It’s recommended to continue renting through the summer to maintain your credit.

Q: What if my child grows while renting? Can we exchange the instrument for a larger size?
A: Absolutely! You can upsize instruments without any fees.

Q: Can I switch instruments, like from violin to cello?
A: Yes, you can switch instruments! However, this is only allowed after fulfilling the minimum contract period. If you are on a monthly contract, you may exchange your instrument after the initial 3-month term. For those on a school year term, instrument exchanges can be made at the beginning of the next school year. During school year, instruments are not interchangeable.

All exchanges are subject to instrument availability and must be arranged through our shop.

Q: How do I terminate the rental?
A: Simply return the instrument to LA Violin Shop in good condition. To avoid being charged for the next month, please return the instrument at least 2 business days before your scheduled auto payment date. Note that payments are not prorated or refundable. If you have the Protection Plan and your payments are current, there are no additional fees. Without it, there may be cleaning fees.

Q: Can I use my rental credit to bring rental payments current?
A: No, rental credit cannot be applied to bring rental payments current.

Q: What are the fees associated with rental?
A: Be aware of the following fees:

  • Late Fee: $9.00 for failed automatic payments.
  • Handling Fee: $25.00 for outdated payment information.
  • Chargeback Fee: $35.00 if initiated while possessing the instrument.

Q: How do I know what size instrument my child needs?
A: Sizing depends on arm length, finger length, and comfort. It’s best to have your child assessed in person at our shop or by their orchestra teacher. We offer guidelines based on arm length for violins, violas, and cellos, but personal sizing is most accurate.
