Authenticate LA

Expert Authentication and Certification for Fine Instruments and Bows

Authenticate LA is an exclusive event hosted by LA Violin Shop, offering musicians, collectors, and dealers the opportunity to have their string instruments and bows authenticated, certified, and valued by a team of internationally recognized experts. This event addresses the lack of local expertise in Los Angeles, making it easier for the city's vibrant music community to access world-class instrument services without the need to travel to the East Coast.

Why Authenticate Your Instrument or Bow?

  • Guaranteed Authenticity: Get a Certificate of Authenticity to confirm the origin, maker, and age of your instrument or bow.
  • Protection of Value: A certified instrument is protected from counterfeiting and can increase its resale value.
  • Easier to Insure: A Certificate of Authenticity is essential for insuring your fine instrument.
  • Expert Advice: Receive professional opinions from highly respected experts in the field of string instruments.
  • Authentication vs. Appraisal: Authentication confirms the identity of the instrument or bow, including its maker, year, and place of origin, while appraisal determines the current market value based on the instrument’s condition, provenance, and construction.

Who Are the Experts?

Our team includes some of the most respected names in the industry:

  • Instruments: Vatelot-Rampal - Jean-Jacques Rampal, Jonathan Marolle
  • Bows: Cabinet D'Archetiers Experts - Yannick Le Canu, Sylvain Bigot

Event Details

  • Next Event: 6th Annual Authenticate LA, January 2026
  • Location: Los Angeles Violin Shop
  • Appointment Only: Priority will be given to those committed to obtaining certification. Verbal appraisals may be available if there are open spots, but they are not guaranteed.
  • Certificate of Authenticity Fee: 5% of the appraised value (minimum of €400 or 5% of instrument value, whichever is greater.)

How Does Authentication Work?

  • The authentication experts may employ several different techniques. The authenticity of an instrument or bow (i.e., whether it is genuinely the product of the maker whose label or signature it bears) can only be determined through comparative study of design, model, wood characteristics, and varnish texture. This expertise is gained through examination of hundreds or even thousands of instruments, and there is no substitute for an experienced eye.
  • A Certificate of Authenticity will confirm the instrument’s maker, year of creation, and country of origin.
