The brothers Roger (b. 1901) and Max (b. 1903) were trained by their grandfather Sebastien Deroux in Mirecourt and worked there with Leon Mougenot, before joining Harry Dykes in London. They established a succsesful workshop in Paris in 1923. Built in 1949, this violin, No. 255, was originally part of a matched quartet that was built for the "Premiers Prix/Expositions-Concours Internationaux de Lutherie Moderne" in Cremona. The brothers Millant were awarded a Gold Medal for their quartet that year and it is interesting to note the inclusion of other great names in lutherie who submitted instruments: Igino Sderci, Carlo Bisiach, Pietro Sgarabotto, and Marino Capicchioni- a veritable who's who in modern violin making!
