Violin by Karl Roy Mittenwald 1978
Karl Roy grew up in Hanover and studied at the Mittenwald School from 1952 to 1955. After working at Lothar Franke’s workshop, he earned his master’s degree in 1958 and established his own workshop. He joined the Mittenwald School as a tutor in 1960, became its director in 1972, and served until his retirement in 1990, remaining closely involved thereafter. Over his career, he built approximately 180 instruments, specializing in historical reproductions. From 1973 to 2008, Roy also taught in the United States, helping to found the University of New Hampshire’s Summer Violin Craftsmanship Institute, where he served as violin making master.
