Violin by Joseph Nicolas, Mirecourt 1840-45
This violin labelled J. Nicolas Fils, is a characteristic example of Mirecourt lutherie of the early 19th century. Exceedingly fine materials were used in its construction. The single piece back and it's narrow curls are lively and irregular. The two-piece top has fine to medium grain and widens towards the edges. The varnish, showing the wear patterns of steady use, is a glorious and glowing orange-brown color on a golden ground. This violins' voice is mature and well-rounded in all registers. It would be an excellent violin for an advancing student or devoted amateur.
