Violin by Antonio Sgarbi, Palermo 1909

Antonio Sgarbi was the son and pupil of Giuseppe Sgarbi. The family moved to Rome in 1878, where Antonio worked in his father's workshop until 1905, when he became luthier to the Bellini Conservatoire in Palermo, a position he held until 1911. After a brief period in Modena, he returned to Rome, later operating as Sgarbi and Sons. His work, characterized by a polished golden-orange or yellow varnish, was often loose and graceless but well finished, achieving effective low archings. 

This example from 1909 features a low arching and the tone presents a pleasing nuttiness and woodsy quality that propels the sound up and out into the hall. It also features a wonderfully figured two-piece back and the mild varnish is golden brown in color throughout that has come to characterize Sgarbi’s instruments. It would be an appropriate instrument for an advancing or professional player or a beneficent patron or investor.
