Violin Bow by Roberto Cani PB1094, Los Angeles 2023
Roberto Cani (1967–2025) was an internationally acclaimed violinist whose artistry and devotion to music inspired audiences worldwide. Beginning his violin studies at age seven, he built a distinguished career marked by expressive playing, a velvety sound, and remarkable virtuosity. After settling in Los Angeles in 1991, he became concertmaster of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra in 2011 and performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician across Europe, the United States, Asia, and South Africa. Music was his lifelong passion, and the violin was his true voice.
Alongside his performing career, Roberto developed a profound dedication to violin and bow making. His interest began during his studies at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, where his friendship with luthier Erminio Malaguti sparked a lifelong fascination with the craft. A “walking encyclopedia” of violin history and technique, Roberto created his first violin in 2012 and went on to make four violins, one viola, and more than 50 bows, admired for their craftsmanship and singing tone. His expertise was recognized internationally, including an invitation to judge the 2022 VSA violin making competition, and his legacy lives on through the instruments and bows he so lovingly created.
