Viola by Georges Chanot France - 15 1/2"
Georges Chanot I (1801–1883) was a leading 19th-century French luthier trained in Mirecourt under his father, Joseph Chanot, before establishing his Paris workshop in 1823. Renowned for refined copies of Cremonese and Brescian masters—especially Guarneri “del Gesù”—his instruments are noted for elegant modeling, harmonious outlines, rich orange-brown varnish, and a powerful, resonant tone. Regarded as the equal of Lupot and Gand, Chanot helped set the standard of mid-19th-century French violin making, with his workshop continuing under the Chanot-Chardon name after his retirement in 1872.
